Project Comfort is a ministry that provides quilts to Lutheran World Relief as well as local organizations. In addition to being a cozy bedcover, a quilt can be a baby carrier tied around a mother’s back, a floor covering, a market display spread on the ground piled with vegetables, or a sack for transporting goods to market, a sunshade, a shawl, and most importantly a constant reminder that someone far away cares.
October 2019:
Today we celebrate the Blessing of the Gifts! We rejoice today and give thanks for the abundance God has bestowed on us. Through YOUR contributions of time and materials and monetary grants for Thrivent Financial Action Teams, 134 personal care kits and 25 fleece blankets will be blessed today and sent on to the in-gathering for Lutheran World Relief.
Today, we are also celebrating a milestone for Project Comfort. We made 105 quilts this year! Since we began sewing and sandwiching quilts in 2011, we are happy to say we have made over 600 quilts!! We quilt to provide shelter and warmth. We quilt so parents can carry their children in something warm and snuggly. We quilt so a family can display market items or have a rug. We quilt because we are blessed.
Lutheran World Relief provides us with tracking information as to where our quilts have been sent.
Since November 2012 until the present, our quilts have been sent to Eastern Visayas, the Philippines, to comfort those affected by typhoon Haiyan; to Dubai, India, for distribution to the United Emirates Nations; to Tanzania; and Peru. Our quilts have also traveled to the Dominican Republic; to Vision Alive in Kenya; have been distributed to Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey. Our quilts have been sent to the Republic of Georgia and Angola, India, Nepal, Sierra Leone, and Armenia as well as stayed right here in the Lehigh Valley.
Thank you to Thrivent Financial Corporation for the Action Team grants that helped fund Project Comfort, the Personal Care kits, as well as the fleece for the blankets.
A huge thank you to the members of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church and VBS for YOUR generosity of materials and time in assembling kits and tying knots.
